Last night, I attended the Lizzo concert with my daughter and two of my best friends.
"The Special Tour"
I am still smiling ear to ear and can barely talk from screaming and singing along. Those in attendance ranged in age from 6-76, a huge variety of beautiful individuals. The message of the show was...
"YOU'RE SPECIAL"
During the show, Lizzo took the time to call out to people from front rows all the way to the back rows.
"You in the pink skirts. I see you. I love you."
"You with the drawing, send that down so I can sign it"
She even hugged my best friend and gave a shout out to my daughter and I who were way up in the rafters.
Her message comes at such an appropriate time in our culture. We are facing a nationwide setback in human rights amongst women, people of color and in the LGBTQ+ community.
Like Lizzo spreading her message of love, on the flipside the character of Mary Poppins, flies in to help Mr. Banks open his eyes and see his family and his life. She shows him the joy in living a life of fulfillment, not based on what others expect of him, but what brings him joy. In finally finding this happiness in himself, he is able to embrace his life and his family.
"A cover is not the book, so open it up & take a look"
-Mary Poppins
Wouldn't it be amazing if all beings could be embraced with love? No judgement, just love. No more comparing our waist line, income, race, religion, color or sexual identity to another. No more living by others expectations based on ancient patriarchal beliefs. Just live in our full authenticity.
No matter how you measure yourself today, as Mary Poppins would say, I want you all to know you are...
"Practically perfect in every way."
For those feeling marginalized or less than in any way, to quote Lizzo,
With love and kindness,
Wendy
